Handwriting

Readiness    Instruction
For some children, holding a pencil and learning to write comes naturally. For others, learning to write is a source of frustration for them and their parents who are trying desperately to help their children become confident and successful students. Using a combination of multi-sensory techniques, I have had great success making handwriting fun for even the most reluctant writers.

"Ms. Goldberg improved my son's handwriting skills and self confidence a great deal!"
-Robin Cheris, Gaithersburg, MD

Occupational Therapists are often charged with teaching and improving handwriting skills because of our extensive knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the hand and arm, as well as thorough a knowledge of visual motor and fine motor skill development. One of my greatest joys as a therapist is to help a child progress from thinking "I can't do it" to excitement and pride in their written work.

There are 2 essential elements to writing:

  1. Readiness

  2. Before introducing structured handwriting instruction, a child should have achieved certain milestones of underlying visual motor skill development. Specifically, children should be able to copy _ | O / \ and + before focusing on writing letters. Learn more >>
